Better Patient Care through Best Professional Standards

About Us

Welcome to the Institute of Healthcare Management

IHM is the Professional organisation for managers throughout healthcare, including: the NHS; Independent Providers; Healthcare Consultants and the Armed Forces.

The IHM’s focus is improving patient/user care wherever and whenever they need healthcare, the route to achieving this is through the promotion of excellence in healthcare management. We achieve this by:

  • Publishing standards of management practice
  • Promoting the IHM Code (covering behavioural and ethical aspects of management practice)
  • Establishing a Continuous Development framework
  • Promoting CPD and moving towards implementing a CPD validation mechanism
  • Holding CPD events in the four UK countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Establishing a coaches database to support members when they choose an executive coach

The IHM is influential – it has access to the highest offices of the NHS, many of the senior players in the NHS are members and, more importantly, by promoting CPD we influence the management practice of thousands of managers.

The IHM is developing its educational portfolio and has developed a number of products – such as our Milestones programmes. You will find more information about our educational products on our website.

Occasionally our members need personal support, the IHM has a range of approaches, including:

  • Arranging mentors
  • The IHM helpline
  • Some personal support during difficult times

President

Stuart BainStuart Bain formerly chair of the IHM Scotland, has taken over as President of the Institute of Healthcare Management.  He succeeds Gerry McSorley, whose term has now been completed.

Speaking of his role within the Institute, Stuart, who is now Chief Executive of East Kent University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“It is a great honour to have been asked by fellow members to succeed Gerry McSorley who has been an outstanding President.

The healthcare sector is facing challenges on all sides requiring the traditional role of the professional manager to be redefined.  The Institute, with its wealth of experience in devising packages of tailored professional development, is ideally placed to support healthcare managers to meet the changes needed to deliver first class patient services.  I am proud to have been asked by my peers to be their President.”

Our Direction of Travel

The last year has seen a rigorous scrutiny of the organisation resulting in a restructure of Headquarters from 12 to 8 staff- a leaner and more focussed core team.

We have been working to a business plan that has been concentrating on implementing a new Governance structure and building the foundations for a future application for Chartered Status; stabilising our membership; reviewing the benefits for membership and focussing on developing what members want out of their membership; consolidating and delivering education and training opportunities for members and non members; raising the profile of IHM in the political arena and developing a strategy that will ensure the sustainability of the organisation for the future.

Headquarters will now focus on looking outwards from the centre, responding and working proactively with the Divisions and Regions to substantiate local, regional and national IHM activities for the benefit of members, enabling them to consolidate and evidence the professional status of the healthcare manager.

Following feedback from members we are reviewing the quality of employment, professional and personal support. We are piloting an on line CPD tool to enable members to record, reflect on and access appropriate Continuous Professional Development episodes and we are consolidating a suite of education and training opportunities that will support members through their career pathway.

Healthcare managers make an invaluable contribution to today’s healthcare service IHM can support the development of individuals, teams and organisations in an ever changing and challenging environment.
