In 2007 to Institute of Healthcare Management launched the Unsung Heroes & Heroines Awards as a means of providing recognition to the roles played by thousands day in day out ensuring patients and communities get excellent healthcare services, even though their work generally goes unheralded.

The beauty of this award is that it is not prescriptive, so someone who has made a difference to patients' lives by cheerfully serving tea and biscuits on the wards, can be considered alongside engineers who keep the boilers of a hospital going through thick and thin or nurses, doctors and, importantly managers and administrators who make a difference, but who wouldn not normally get their names up in lights.
