Better Patient Care through Best Professional Standards

Scotland

I am delighted to have been appointed to Chair the Scottish Division of the IHM and I would like to pay tribute to the work of Stuart Bain whose work in leading the IHM in Scotland in recent years has left the Institute in a very strong position on which we can build. We are also particularly fortunate to have both Jim Currie and Hilary Ianotti supporting the work of the branch as well as Hazel Scott our Vice Chair. The Scottish Division is in the strong position with over 750 members and a relatively secure financial position.Malcolm Wright

I have been a member of the Institute for some 30 years and I am convinced that managers in the NHS have a critical role to play in improving services to patients, improving health and in reducing inequalities. Managers also need a strong voice in a rapidly developing devolved Scotland while maintaining good links with our colleagues in other parts of the United Kingdom.

I look forward to working with all members in Scotland to further develop the practice, professionalism and profile of management in NHS Scotland.

Malcolm Wright
Chief Executive, NHS Education for Scotland

The IHM is the leading professional body for healthcare managers in Scotland, with a high profile and reputation amongst members, partner organisations and decision-makers. IHM Scotland provides professional support, advice, information and learning opportunities for all types of healthcare manager, from trainees to directors, whether in operational or service-based roles, acute or community settings.

In addition to all of the benefits that come with membership of the IHM in the UK, members of IHM Scotland have access to:

  • a comprehensive education programme offering a wide variety of CPD and learning opportunities, delivered in locations across Scotland throughout the year. Our education events are designed to offer a variety of learning experiences and formats and to focus on topics which are relevant, timely and reflective of both the real challenges and priorities Scottish members face. Our education programme now offers the opportunity to share learning with colleagues from other parts of the public sector
  • the Management Development Network, a joint initiative with NHS Education for Scotland, providing informal development opportunities at national, regional and local level, based on priorities identified by managers themselves
  • elements of the IHM’s Milestones Continuing Professional Development programme which have been specially tailored for Scottish managers’ needs
  • IHM Scotland annual conference, now Scotland’s major healthcare management event. Annual conference is a valuable opportunity for all managers to reflect on, discuss and debate current and future issues, to listen to top speakers from within and beyond NHS Scotland, to hear about developments and innovations in management practice, and to network and socialise with colleagues
  • regular events organised in collaboration with partner organisations and catering for specific groups of managers, such as those working in Community Health Partnerships or Facilities Management
  • information and updates on management practice and developments in national policy and legislation, including a handy electronic Weekly Update sent directly to your inbox. (IHM Scotland members who do not currently receive the Weekly Update should send their details to ihmupdate@yahoo.co.uk in order to do so)
  • a Policy Forum for Board Executives and other senior managers
  • links with the Network and Learning for Practice Management and the Vocational Training Scheme for Practice Managers and involvement in the National Management Training Scheme
