Released on 02/09/2009
New season of Networking kicks off
A packed programme of Management Development Network events has been drawn up for the second half of 2009, with meetings taking place in more locations across Scotland than ever before and speakers and topics new to the Network making an appearance. Highlights include:
· Scheduled discussions with long-serving NHS Scotland senior executives - confirmed so far are Robert Calderwood, chief executive of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde on 24 November, and in Perth on 27 November, Gerry Marr, chief operating officer of NHS Tayside.
· Special learning and networking events for managers in Shetland and Orkney, on 30 September and 1 October respectively, led by Charlotte and Brian from the MDN north region, both of whom are highly experienced facilitators
As always, Network events are open to all managers, free to attend and usually include refreshments, and your local facilitators are keen to hear your thoughts on all and any aspects of MDN activities.

Risk management and safety: lessons from aviation
Making his debut for the Network in September is
Captain Hugh Sheils, a working airline pilot who also runs a risk management consultancy, helping a wide range of organisations apply learning from the
aviation sector about improving safety, understanding the human factors in risk management, and the
impact that working in high-pressure situations has on human performance. The parallels between aviation and healthcare are clear - both are sectors in which the safety of the customer/patient must be
paramount, yet where staff can suddenly find
themselves working in the kinds of stressful
circumstances where mistakes can happen. Captain Sheils’ presentations promise to offer a thought-provoking perspective on this crucial subject for healthcare managers. Using real case study materials and documentary footage, he will discuss the
relationship between human performance, managing risk, reducing errors and improving patient safety; examine the roles played by leadership and culture; and help attendees to apply the lessons to their own work as managers of people and services.
Captain Sheils will be speaking at MDN events across Scotland from the end of September, beginning in
Lanarkshire and Ayrshire and them moving on to
venues in the north, north-east and south-east throughout October. Look out for details in the MDN News and online, or contact your local facilitator.
From athletics to healthcare...
George McNeill is already familiar to many
managers in Scotland either from his
appearances at past events, or from his previous life as a highly successful professional athlete and footballer. George returns to the MDN this month, bringing his acclaimed presentation on Turning Potential into Reality to venues in the south-east region. Those who have heard George speak before know that he has a knack of
translating his own approach to challenges into one that is both relevant and instructive for
managers in health and social care.
Calling managers in Inverclyde
The Greater Glasgow and Clyde Network is
planning to organise events in the Inverclyde area later this year, and facilitator Peter O’Hagan needs your help. If you have any ideas about venues, dates and topics, Peter wants to hear from you - contact him at peterlinn@aol.com.
Glasgow MDN to go online
The Greater Glasgow and Clyde Network will shortly join the North and South East regions in establishing a presence in cyberspace. Peter O’Hagan hopes to have a website and blog for the region up and running by the end of September: look out for developments on the general MDN website at www.ihmscotland.co.uk/mdn.
