Board areas come together for cross-regional networking

Following some successful larger scale Network meetings in the second half of 2009, expect to see more cross-regional meetings bringing together managers from neighbouring NHS board areas. Already planned is an event for the South West region which will be addressed by Dr Carol Craig, chief executive of the Centre for

Confidence and Wellbeing and a leading writer and

practitioner in the field of positive psychology. Her

presentation will explore how team morale and outcomes

can be improved by fostering optimism, self-belief,

resilience and a sense of purpose and adopting a holistic

approach to wellbeing and improvement.

Look out also for a West region event on the topic of

work/life balance, which will be confirmed shortly - look

out for details on the Glasgow and Clyde and Lanarkshire

network websites.

Other key management topics coming up on

the MDN schedule in 2010:

LEAN thinking - LEAN is an increasingly hot topic in

healthcare management. The system is now being used in

NHS boards across Scotland to empower frontline staff to

identify waste and inefficiencies. Sharon Slane from NHS

Tayside will discuss LEAN and rapid improvement in

Dundee in March.

Neuro-linguistic programming – coach and trainer Brian

Costello has been using the psychological technique of

NLP as a management tool for seven years. He will

introduce the concept to Lanarkshire MDN at the end of

January.

Coaching – a topic of perennial interest to managers, MDN

favourite John Armstrong will speak at a number of

locations during January and February.

Get networking in 2010

Only a few days into the new year, and the Managers’ Development Network diary is already filling up with events covering topics both familiar and unexplored and featuring speakers new to the Network as well as returning tried-and-tested favourites. As well as the selection of events below, managers in NHS Forth Valley and in the Clyde region should look out for events in their area during February and March, to be confirmed soon.

All of the MDN regions now have their own websites and all events can be booked directly online. Go to http://ihmscotland.wordpress.com and click on the link for your region. With challenging times ahead in the NHS, securing continued service improvement will rely more than ever on professionals coming

together to share experiences and best practice - so make the most of your Network in 2010.

Farewell to Charlotte

Charlotte Leggatt has stepped down as one of the MDN Facilitators for the North region.

Charlotte was one of the first Facilitators to be appointed following the launch of the MDN and was instrumental in helping to establish and grow the Network. Brian Blake will continue in the North region Facilitator’s role. IHM members will still hear from Charlotte in her capacity as the practice managers’ representative on the IHM

Scottish Council.

Senior NHS leaders talk to the Network

The new season of MDN events offers further chances  to hear senior NHS managers share their experiences and ideas about professional and career development and its contribution to service improvement.

Following Network appearances last year by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde chief executive Robert Calderwood and NHS Tayside operational director, Gerry Marr, Peter Gabbitas returns in March to look at the links between professional development and leadership. Chief executive of the former West Lothian NHS Trust, Peter now holds a joint appointment by NHS Lothian and City of Edinburgh Council as Director of Health and Social Care. He follows his previous talk in the Borders with a Network appearance in Edinburgh.
