Recognising and Recording CPD

Guidance for IHM Members

IHM Position on CPD

The IHM Healthcare Management Code lays down the three characteristics which should be embodied by every IHM Member.  These are that IHM Members should:

  • Have a base line set of competences relevant to the level of management at which they work
  • Be committed to keeping their learning up-to-date – usually referred to as continuous professional development (CPD) and keeping a record of their personal learning
  • Exhibit behaviour consistent with the values agreed by the Institute

Base-line competence is monitored through the application and upgrading process, and behaviour, as and when required, by the Professional Conduct Committee.

This new guidance has been prepared and agreed by the Professional Development and Events Committee in order to help IHM members recognise and record the management CPD they undertake.

The guidance refers specifically to the CPD “Record and Reflection” format that is included with this guidance.

CPD Monitoring

IHM will begin its revised CPD monitoring programme with the issuing of the new guidance, examples and form to all members followed by an information gathering exercise in 2009 when a 5% sample of IHM members will be asked to submit their CPD record and reflections on the “IHM Record and Reflect” spreadsheet.

The aims of this initial exercise will be to:

  • Encourage members to engage in systematic planning and recording of CPD
  • Send a signal to members and externally that IHM is serious about planned, recorded and evidenced CPD
  • Learn about the types of CPD, planning and recording mechanisms that IHM members are already using
  • Provide evidence on the CPD currently being undertaken by professional health and social care managers, and its outcomes
  • Inform future CPD requirements that may be set by IHM
