Governance Between Organisations debate paper launch at NHS Confederation
Released on 18/06/2008
Professor Bryan Stoten today launched the “Governance Between Organisations” debate paper – the second step in the development of integrated governance. Covering mutual aid, care co-ordination and partnership working the debate paper identifies steps that NHS organisations need to be taking to ensure joined up accountability in an increasingly complex local health and social care market.
Dr. John Bullivant, principle author of the paper, said:
“The NHS has found, like all large organisations, that you cannot outsource your reputational risk. Whoever supplies our services, we expect the NHS to be accountable.”
¨Institute of Healthcare Management Chair Andrew Corbett-Nolan (a co-author of the debate paper) said:
“As both commissioning mechanisms and provision patterns grow increasingly Byzantine, NHS organisations need to be mindful that patients are often bemused. They perceive they are being cared for by the NHS, whether they are accessing their GP, the local NHS Foundation Trust or at an independent provider. Boards need to join up their governance thinking so that, as far as the patient is concerned, the whole system of services is preserved. This debate paper takes us nearer delivering this in practice”
