IHM Annual Awards Dinner - Report
Released on 18/05/2009

The Institute of Healthcare Management held its Annual Awards Dinner on the 14th May at Savoy Place in London.

The evening was a great success with over 140 people attending.  The evening started with a drinks reception followed by dinner in the Riverside Rooms which provided outstanding panoramic views of London from St Paul’s Cathedral all the way across to the Houses of Parliament.

Entertainment was provided in the form of a Jazz Quartet who played throughout the evening and a magician who spent some time amusing delegates at each of the tables.

Andrew Corbett-Nolan, Chair of the IHM, compered the evening.  Susan Hodgetts, Chief Executive of the IHM gave a short speech entitled ‘Shifting the Focus’. Following the speeches were the presentations of the awards.

The Nuffield Trust Joint Travel award was the first to be presented.  The Nuffield Trust Joint Travel Award offers the chance for healthcare managers and nurses to undertake a joint study tour overseas, including travel to developing countries, or to other UK countries, with the aim of working together to improve the patient experience.

The winners of the Nuffield Trust Joint International Study Award in 2008 were Mary Dawood & Iain Taylor and Caroline Lawson & Alan Bartle.  More information about the study tours that they undertook can be found on here.

The IHM awarded 33 new Fellows this year.  These were the result of two different Fellowship Programmes.  The first 12 were members who participated in a special development programme for members of the Armed Forces, consisting of seminars, mentoring and learning sets.  The remaining 21 achieved fellowship through participating in the IHM Fellowship Pilot which was launched following a review of the difference Fellowship processes.  Now that the Pilot is complete a final review and evaluation is taking place and the IHM is looking to launch the revised Fellowship scheme in September/October 2009.  A Full list of the 2009 Fellows can be found here.

Also presented were the IHM Companionship Award and the Unsung Heroes & Heroines Award.  In order to be eligible for Companionship of the Institute the member must have been a member of the Institute for a period of at least 10 years continuous membership and have made a significant and sustained contribution to the profession of management, with the contribution having a direct relevant to healthcare management.  More information about the award and the 2009 companions can be found here.

The beauty of Unsung Heroes & Heroines Award is that it is not prescriptive, so someone who has made a difference to patients’ lives by cheerfully serving tea and biscuits on the wards, can be considered alongside engineers who keep the boilers of a hospital going through think and thin or nurses, doctors, and importantly managers and administrators who make a difference, but who would not normally get their names up in lights.  More information about the award and the 2009 winners can be found here.
