Better Patient Care through Best Professional Standards

Products & Materials

Managing Health and Social Care is a modular open learning framework of two sets of materials designed to support individual and organisational learning and development in the management of health and social care.

Managing Health & Social Care and Health and Social services Management materials have been specifically developed for the sector by the Institute of Healthcare Management, Open University Business School, NHSU, Open Learning Foundation and the Social Services Inspectorate working in collaboration. The materials are regularly updated.

The materials form the basis of many accredited programmes delivered by other organisations. You can find out more about these programmes and Centres on this site.

The materials have been designed to meet the needs of new or existing managers whether in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors. This includes for example Clinicians, Social Workers, Managers of residential care homes, Nurse Managers, Managers & Seniors in the Allied Health Professions & Managers in functional areas such as HR, Estates, Catering & Finance.

The aim of the materials is to help you manage more efficiently by developing a wide range of competencies and as such both are currently linked to the National Standards for Management originally developed by the Management Charter Initiative (MCI). These standards are being upgraded and we will match the materials to these new standards as they become available.

The materials help you develop your management skills by informing you of what is known about management and what other people have identified from experience and experiment. They encourage you to apply these ideas, theories and concepts to your job with a view to finding a better way of doing things. This is achieved by means of activities and theories interspersed within the text of each workbook.

Below you will find the indices for the current materials which can be downloaded for the use of existing students and for those interested in seeing what is covered in each module.
