Introduction

HSSM, which has been available since 1995, has recently been completely updated and reviewed. The programme consists of six modules.

HSSM is designed for middle and senior managers throughout the care sector, including health and social care professionals with significant management responsibilities. The programme provides high-quality management development, and enables managers from all sectors to study common material together.

HSSM provides access to the following qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 5
  • University diploma in management
  • Credit towards Post Qualifying Advanced Award in Social Work.

HSSM Modules:

  • Managing Your Enterprise
    reviews forces for change affecting your enterprise such as the cultural, socio-demographic and political contexts within which the enterprise functions within which planned change as the core management activity has to operate and thus to understand better the opportunities and constraints that influence it. You learn how to adapt to continually changing circumstances and to explore ways of successfully managing change. The significance of organizational culture in the management of change is explored. This module sets the scene for the rest of the course.
  • Personal & Team effectiveness
    starts by considering what is effectiveness and then considers how effectiveness can be enhanced. It explores working with groups and teams in the wider context and frameworks for assisting personal and team effectiveness including issues concerning the future workforce.
  • Managing Service Delivery
    covers approaches to designing service delivery systems in a quality context including adopting a project management approach
  • Managing Information
    reviews the importance of information management in delivery of services. It explores sources of information managers can access, analysis of information for forecasting & planning and information security.
  • Managing Finance
    introduces fundamental concepts needed for effective financial management with a focus on costing and budgetary management to enhance organizational performance and accountability. It discusses a range of techniques for evaluation of capital projects and the decision making processes involved in capital investment.
  • Business & Service planning
    focuses on an approach to systematic business planning as a rigorous approach to planned change. It brings together and integrates the previous modules.
