Improving Your Effectiveness

Improving your Effectiveness Introduction

The toolkit consists of a range of self-development activities. As you complete the activities, you are encouraged to look at two aspects:

  • Potential gaps and development needs
  • What you can learn about yourself as a learner.

The self-assessment activities will require you to analyse current workplace situations and to reflect upon how you typically behave.

In each section, the focus is upon enhancing your personal effectiveness and enabling you to be more effective at learning from experience. Increasing your ability to learn from experience will place you in a positive cycle of learning, developing and changing in ways that increase your personal flexibility, enhance your ability to handle a range of situations and developing strategies for influencing different types of people.

The toolkit consists of an introduction and seven further sections, three of which focus on assessing your effectiveness, whilst two focus on you as a learner. The final section pulls together what you want to learn and how you want to learn it, and helps you produce a personal development plan.

The sections are:

Assessing your effectiveness:

  • Building a personal picture
  • Personal effectiveness
  • You within your organisation.

You as a learner:

  • Becoming an effective learner
  • A reflective diary.

Planning ahead:

  • My Development and Learning
  • A balanced portfolio.

The Library has a number of resources that you can explore in order to find out more about the subject. These include web sites with useful information and articles and books that are concerned with Personal Effectiveness. However these are just some examples of the resources available. They are not an exhaustive list. We hope that you will begin to do your own research as you explore this subject. To help you do this then we have added a search facility in the Library area where you can find out what other materials are available through the Internet. Type into the search box the topic you want like "personal effectiveness" or "managing change" or whatever item you are looking for and then a list of possible relevant sites will appear. Learn to use the search facility by experimenting, as it is a very useful and important tool.

The Case Studies will be developed and added to over time so that you can find real life situations where personal effectiveness has been done well or badly. We would also welcome case study material that you may have so that we can share it with others.
