The concept behind Milestones is based upon two difficulties that were identified through consultation with Training and Development and HR managers from the NHS and from social care. These were:
- Release of busy managers over long periods of time, and
- The relatively high individual cost of placing managers on award-bearing programmes.
The tensions around managers remaining competent and fit to practice was also a driver which meant that regardless of these two obstacles they had to comply with Personal Development Reviews, National Care Standards, Registration, Inspection and Professional body requirements as well as respond to the demand for evidence of Continuous Professional Development. To help managers in this way all Milestones have been mapped to the National Occupational Standards, the Leadership Qualities Framework and to the NHS KSF Dimensions and levels.
The Milestones response has been to take each of these into account and build a suitable flexible model of accredited learning delivered at Masters level with general credit from the OU accreditation service.
The MHSC Milestones programme can now be accesssed via this site for individuals who wish to enrol and for organisations who wish to become approved IHM Milestones Delivery Centres.
