Health Care Study Tour to Canada
Mental Health and Addictions
June 6 – 16, 2010
This study tour will bring together a small group of senior health leaders working in the mental health and addictions field to compare best practices in the areas of governance, business models and services. Colleagues from our host country will guide the discussions. The intent is to provide a forum for the exchange of information, ideas and experiences that will foster relationships between Canadians and their United Kingdom counterparts. A copy of the flyer can be found here The Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM) and the Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE) have agreed to establish a Learning Partnership, which will expand the learning opportunities for health leaders in both Canada and the UK and in doing so, add value to members in both organisations.
This Partnership has now been confirmed by a memorandum of understanding that was signed by the CEOs and presidents of both organisations on the 13th May 2009 at a dinner hosted by the Canadian High Commissioner, James R. Wright, in Canada House, London.

The memorandum means that health leaders and members of both organisations will benefit from
- Learning from different models of health system delivery, including public/private issues
- Access to international colleagues for problem solving, mentoring, dialogue and membership
- Improving the broader leadership/knowledge exchange through international sharing of leading practice solutions, and approaches and lessons learned.
- By adding international sharing and learning opportunities, the overall value of membership is changed, contributing to both retention and recruitment success.
Since both countries share similar pressures on their healthcare systems, sharing knowledge, solutions and lessons learned will assist system leaders with healthcare transformation.
The learning partnership has already been characterised by international exchanges of healthcare executives from both countries being given the opportunity to visit the other, allowing those involved a tour and insight into the workings of the health systems in Canada and the UK.
So far the following exchanges have taken place:
May 2009 exchange to UK
As part of our continuing learning partnership with the CCHSE, the IHM hosted a visit of 15 Canadian Health Service Executives in May of 2009. The focus of this visit was to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations, but also featured a tour of the hospitals and healthcare services in Runcorn, Leeds and London.
With the support of NHS, Academic and commercial sponsors, the week’s agenda allowed the UK to share with colleagues from across the Atlantic some of the challenges, the evidence and success stories of delivering healthcare in 2009. The four core topics covered follow on from the visit by IHM members to Toronto in November:
- Integration of secondary and primary care services
- Managing services in an economic downturn
- The challenges of delivering inner city health services, including mental health and maternity
- The challenges of providing emergency care
The presentations given during the exchange are available in the document section of this page.
November 2008 exchange to Canada
It was agreed that a formal meeting between the two organisations should take place to determine the areas of mutual interest and potential work streams. To ensure that this activity is inclusive, 12 members of the IHM undertook a pilot exchange to Canada in November of 2008. The visit was organised and hosted by the CCHSE
The November, 2008 visit included:
- attendance to the HealthAchieve2008 Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) conference and exhibition
- Site visits to key healthcare organisations
- Sponsored dinners with key healthcare decision makers in Canada
- A formal business meeting to determine what the long term relationship between the two organisations
